WHY?

WHY do I "teach" like this? Why does it work?

In short, because it is fun and effective!

The latest research* shows that we learn a second language like we learned our first as babies: through repetition of interesting, high-frequency language that we understand, in context, and then having some interaction with it is even better.

Imagine holding up a ball to a baby and saying “ball” a few times, and smiling, because balls are fun. Then you say “throw ball” and throw it repeatedly. Eventually baby grows up and first says “me throw ball” but they eventually pick up that it is “I throw ball”. Then later they say “I throwed da ball” and you say “Yes, you THREW the ball, good job.” And they realize it is “threw the” not “throwed da”. STS work the same way.

We focus on and make comprehensible high-frequency words, the top 200 words used in Spanish, and we use them repetitively, make them understood, in many different contexts (stories) so that through time and exposure, your brain catches on, just like you did as a child.

But we are not babies- we are literate, so we don’t have to wait 2-10 years, because WE CAN READ! Reading is one of the most efficient way to learn new vocabulary and pick up grammar rules. In studies of those who just read vs. those who studied vocab lists (words from those readings), the read- only group remembered more word meanings, longer- months after the test. That is why STS provides so many reading opportunities with texts created especially for 1st year students.

Research also proves that we can't learn when we are stressed! Enter stories! Who doesn't love a good story (think Netflix, Disney+...)? That's why STS just tells stories- they are a powerful and enjoyable to listen to, creating the space in your brain to be able to learn.

Since language is a tool for communication, STS provides for that too. No matter what tier you are on, you have opportunities to virtually communicate with other learners, either in class or in Tertulia. (Tertulia = a gathering to discuss things.)
